This post builds on the project created in my last post, Open Your Eyes to OSGi, in which we created a simple OSGi project using Eclipse Equinox. In this post you convert that project into a server application bundle and run it on Jetty, embedded in Eclipse Equinox. First, we'll define a directory for static web content using an extension point and test it, and then we'll write a Servlet and use an extention point to register it too.

As you may or may not know, I have been working on Groovy Monkey for some time now. I think it is a useful tool and has a number of benefits over its predecessor Eclipse Monkey. Right now I am hoping that I will have the opportunity to take over Eclipse Monkey and take all of Groovy Monkey's improvements and make them more available to everyone.

The final milestone and feature-complete version of Eclipse 3.4M7 was released on Friday, with a number of improvements over the previous Eclipse 3.3 version. There will be a number of release candidates with an expected final release date of Eclipse 3.4 (Ganymede) in June.

A huge reason for me to make a little detour to Groovyland, was IntelliJ IDEA's excellent Groovy support. It's almost as good as with Java. Scala's IDE support on the other hand is very rudimentary. Does IDE Support Influence Your Language Choice?

The article will also explain how to deploy the resulting BIRT report into a webcontainer (tomcat) and how to use it in an Eclipse RCP application. Eclipse Europa is used for this tutorial. I changed my eclipse.ini file around after researching some jvm option settings. I primarily use CFEclipse, Mylyn, and Subclipse. I am not a jvm options expert, but I referenced several articles and did a simple test to check performance......

Virtually everyone who has visited the Scala project page has seen the info page for the Scala plugin for Eclipse. There are a few screenshots, an update site and very little instruction on how to proceed from there. Those of you who have actually installed this plugin can vouch for how terribly it works as well as the remarkable lack of usefulness in its functionality.

m2eclipse team is glad to announce 0.9.2 release. This release includes several fixes for issues found in previous versions as well as additional fixes for Maven embedder. New version can be installed from the project update site. The "New and Noteworthy" list for this and previous releases is available on the wiki.

Proprietary Eclipse RCP as well as JSR-295 (Beans Binding) databinding frameworks require the realization of PropertyChangeSupport in the "model" entities. Otherwise changes in the JPA-layer wouldn't be automatically propagated to the UI.

Light and fast seems to be a recipe for success for Jetty these days, giving new life to server side applications in Java. As more and more developers realize they don't need the heavyweight app servers of old, interest in a reliable, free, lightweight "get the job done" Java servers is likely to increase.
